The Assets You Already Have, But Aren't Using

Seth Godin has written about the idea that if you have a million dollars in a safety deposit box but don't know it's there, you can't spend it, use it, or count on it.

You can have a tremendous asset and still get nothing from it — simply because you can't access it, or don't know it exists.

Our potential and internal gifts work the same way. Each of us carries strengths, skills, resources, and perspectives that are unique to us, and very valuable. Yet so often, we remain unwilling or unable to reach them. And so the millions in the safety deposit box sit untouched.

Which means the first step to the growth you say you want is simple: acknowledge the assets you're not using.

… The email list of stockists that you’ve never emailed

… Loyalty of the 200 people who've bought from you more than once

… That empty-ish shed in your back garden

… Knowing every vendor at the regional wholesale show by name

… The bit of money that you realized has accumulated in your business savings account

… Those sourcing shortcuts that took you three years to find

… The fact that three local shop owners would carry your work tomorrow if you asked

… Understanding the rhythm of your slow season well enough to plan around it

… The origin story that makes strangers tear up at craft fairs

You don't have to use them yet — just take stock of how many millions you have sitting in safety deposit boxes.

And once you do, the question becomes: if you're not using them – why?
